Film of the Month: The archive

Every month, we recommend a new film on our homepage. Here's the archive of every Film of the Month since we started.

March 2023

Close (2022), dir. Lukas Dhont

Thirteen-year-old boys Leo and Remi are close — almost inseparable — as they begin secondary school. When their new peers question their intimacy, the boys' friendship begins to fray. An emotional portrait of adolescence and grief, flawlessly acted by the two young actors. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

January 2023

M3GAN (2023), dir. Gerard Johnstone

Though we were first apprehensive of this film – Marion has a longstanding fear of life-sized killer dolls, after all – we ended up being swayed by popular opinion and the great reviews that this film garnered, especially amongst queer people. The story follows Gemma (Allison Williams), after she suddenly becomes the carer of her 8-year-old niece. As a talented roboticist who feels entirely out of her depth with her sudden parental duties, she creates M3GAN, a lifelike A.I. doll designed to keep Cady (Violet McGraw) safe. However, M3GAN quickly develops self-awareness and starts following her programming to the extremes... This film is definitely the camp masterpiece that everybody says it is, and a real treat to watch in cinemas. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ½

December 2022

Blue Jean (2022), dir. Georgia Oakley

We went to see Blue Jean (2022) as part of the Cinecity Film Festival in Brighton & Hove. A brilliant debut documenting the emotional impact of Section 28 prohibiting the 'promotion' of LGBTQ+ values in the late 1980s. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
